Win11 24H2 ridiculous bug causes blue screen crashes! Microsoft urgently suspends updates for Western Digital SSD users.

On October 16, Fast Technology reported, according to Windows Latest, that Microsoft has blocked devices equipped with certain Western Digital SSDs from receiving the Windows 11 24H2 major version update.

According to previous reports, many Western Digital SSD users have reported in the community that after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2, their devices began to frequently experience blue screen crashes.

The main affected models are the SN770 and SN580, but not all users have similar issues. The problems mainly arise due to certain faults between the hard drive controller and the system's preset space allocation buffer.

These two Western Digital SSDs support a maximum space allocation buffer of 200MB. Windows 11 23H2 uses a default of 64MB without issues, while 24H2 uses the full 200MB.

For affected users, modifying the buffer allocation through the registry can help resolve this issue, at least temporarily. The specific steps are as follows:

  1. Open the Registry Editor (regedit)

  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorPort

  3. Create a new DWORD value and name it HmbAllocationPolicy (if it does not already exist)

  4. Set the key value to 0 (disable HMB space allocation) or 2 (set HMB space allocation to 64MB), and restart the computer

If the issue is resolved, it is likely due to improper allocation. Users with non-Western Digital SSDs who encounter similar problems can also try the above registry adjustments.
